Christmas Cocoa Snowman

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving! I know I did!!
I had this little guy sitting all alone on my work table. He's leftover from another project and I just couldn't throw him away so I made him into a card. And I think he is much happier now. lol.

I markered him up with a black marker, omitting the words, and then stamped him on Christmas Cocoa designer paper. I also stamped his upper body on Red Christmas Cocoa dsp and cut out the hat and scarf which I paper pieced to his body. If you look real close you can see how I bent his scarf to "blow in the breeze".

Christmas Wreath on Barn Door

Remember the Autumn wreath on the barn door from a previous post? Well I liked it so much I decided to make a Christmas wreath on the barn door! I did it the same way only I used the pine cone/pine branch stamp from Autumn Days stamp set.

This wreath was a little trickier cause it involved a larger stamp with 2 different colors so I had to marker every other time I stamped. Yikes. The saying was also done with markers and I cut out the little cardinal and the Merry Christmas saying to add dimension.
I am really into the round corners right now. lol. What can I say - I like the look! And for added detail I stamped, cut out, popped up and glittered some pine cones! Oh and don't forget the ribbon! I used mini glue dots to make it look wavy.

My Digital Studio Banner

No projects to show today. I have been working on my new banner and signature using My Digital Studio. I wanted to wait until after Thanksgiving to upload it but I had the time today so I decided why not. I may not have time this week.  Hopefully it will begin to get you in the Christmas mood.
MDS_certifiedlogo_rdax_215x115.jpg
And it is official! I am now certified in the use of My Digital Studio! I had to watch (and pay close attention to) videos, and then take some quizzes plus make and upload a card using MDS (short for My Digital Studio). I am far from expert - actually I really only know basic stuff - but the more I play the more I learn and the more I love it!

So that is it for today. I hope you are having a nice relaxing Sunday.

Things I Love birthday

Well you know it seemed like a good idea at the time. When I purchased this stamp set called, appropriately enough, Things I Love, I thought it would be fun to make David, my husband, a birthday card. I planned my colors - blue is his favorite. I  planned the layout - symmetrical cause that is how he prefers things. And I thought the use of the arrows (from our My Way punch) would be especially clever on my part. lol.

After I put it all together I stood back and studied it. And then I began to think, "ok does it mean the things I love or the things he loves?" Cause if it means the things he loves - well I don't know. He doesn't love new shoes. He definitely doesn't love shopping! And he likes chocolate but doesn't love it. I decided to stick with the card no matter what it means and give it to him anyway. He looked at it and read the inside and told me how great it was. And then he said he was a little confused at first cause he doesn't love shoes, shopping or chocolate. Ok so I'll give him that since I was confused too! lol.

Next time I use this stamp set...... it's goin' to my girls cause they love shoes, shopping and chocolate!!

A friend of ours recently lost his elderly mother so I sent him this monochromatic card. I knew he would not only appreciate the message, but would like the card because it was hand made. You see he is a very creative man - the woodworking that he does is amazing!

I used retired designer paper because I am really trying to use up my "old" papers. It could take
awhile! LOL.

Do It Yourself Ribbon Rose

Stampin' Up! has done it again! I love this company! Last month's issue of Stampin' Success contained a tutorial on how to make ribbon roses with our ribbon and Sticky Strip. So clever, so easy, and sooo beautiful! This is the card I made with my Ribbon Rose.

 To make the rose:
  • On a piece of cardstock - mine was about 2 x 2 - lay down Sticky Strip so the strips are touching each other.
  • Peel off the red outer layer
  • Lay down your ribbon twisting tightly and rotating as you go. Make it into a circle or oval.
  • You should have a tight coil of twisted ribbon stuck to the sticky strip
  • Cut around the ribbon so all you see is the "rose". That's it.
I added the leaves with more Sticky Strip.

For the card itself I fell back on one of my favorite color combinations. I haven't used it in a while and oh how I missed it. lol. I used the embossing folder  Elegant Bouquet, for the background. I then stamped the Thyme image from Herb Expressions using Mellow Moss ink and colored it with an aquapainter and Mellow Moss ink. No markers this time! The flowers were colored the same way only using Pale and Perfect Plum ink. You can see by the photo, I also stamped, colored and cut out the flowers again and popped them up with teeny tiny pieces of dimensional.

I really liked the rounded corners of my "Wreath on a Barn Door" card (see post Nov. 16) so I did it again to this card.
Close up of my Ribbon Rose.

Snowflake Snowman

Before I even begin, let me just say that this card was very difficult to photograph!

When I saw this stamp, Simple Seasonal Thanks, in the Holiday Mini I immediately thought how cute he would be stamped on designer paper so I tried it. I used the Christmas Cocoa Specialty paper for the background and the various pieces on the snowman.

Now you may be wondering what I did about the "inside" of the snowman. You know - the part that says Dear_______, etc. Well l just used my Soft Suede marker instead of an ink pad to ink it up. This way I could eliminate the words. And the rest is just stamping, cutting and piecing the scarf and hat. I bent the scarf so it looked like it was blowing.

Half Pearl buttons completed my snowman. I am really loving this specialty paper. You can't see it really well in the photo but the huge snowflakes in the background are flocked. Very cool indeed.

This photo allows you to see how everything was raised up on dimensionals.

Wreath on a Barn Door

Ok ok. I know you have to use your artistic imagination here but that is what I was going for - a wreath on a barn door! Notice the woodgrain paper from Autumn Meadows dsp and the jumbo eyelets for a rustic, barn door kind of look.

This is my last Thanksgiving offering I promise. I need to get going on my Christmas projects!

Here are some details for this card. A wreath using the stamps from Autumn Days stamp set has been done many times and many ways by various stampers so I give them alot of credit cause it is an ingenious way to use the stamps! That being said, this is my take on the idea.

I found it easiest to trace, very lightly with pencil, a circle on my Confetti Cream cardstock. Yes you read correctly, Confetti Cream cardstock! I used to use my "confetti cardstocks" all of the time. Same with the Natural Ivory. And then I just began sticking to Vanilla, White and Kraft. What was I thinking? I love these cardstocks and plan on using them more in the future. Ok I digressed. Sorry.

After I had my circle I just stamped the leaves over and over using various autumn colors. I then added a few Chocolate Chip sprays of berries. For the saying I used my trusty markers. And my final step was to round ALL corners and sponge all edges. And that my friends is my wreath on a barn door!

Store Bought vs. Hand Made

I will show you my hand made card but first...
I need to set the stage before I go any further. You see, like any obsessed, addicted, dedicated stamper knows, alot of time is spent - well - stamping! Not to mention the money - but it is all for a worthwhile cause. Right? I mean if we couldn't feed our obsession - I mean passion - we would be unbearable to live with. And then there is the time spent on the computer - blogging, stalking, catching up on the latest. You know how it is.
Well I am married to a great guy. He is always thanking me for being the wife that I am. The other day I decided to thank him because he is so supportive of my stamping/papercrafting. He never complains about the time or money and always tries to look interested when I show him my latest creation when he really doesn't have the foggiest idea what he is looking at. So I thanked him and his response was " You don't have to thank me. Why would I complain about something that is so important to you? It is who you are." I love that man.

Fast forward to today. It is my birthday today and this morning David gave me this card.
It is a beautiful card - embossed, popped up, little strip of "pearls" on the front. After I analyzed looked at the outside of the card and read what he wrote (always touching and sweet) he said, "I bought this card cause of what you said to me the other day. I saw this card and thought it looked like something you would make only not nearly as good." Then he told me to look at how much it cost. My jaw dropped! He then said, "I bought this specifically to show you that if the card company can get that much for a card that doesn't even come close to your cards, just think how much your cards are worth cause they are so much better. And the fact that you made them means so much more." He gets it, he really does! I gave him a big smooch for that.
You are probably wondering how much it cost. $5.99 plus tax!! For a card with fake ribbon! So yes we do spend lots of money and time on our passion but it is so worth it!!
This is my offering for today. Once again I drew inspiration from Stampin' Up! and their demonstrator magazine, "Stampin' Success". The punch turkey was in one of last year's issues and I had to try it. I made it last year but never posted it so it has some retired colors.

Bag with Scallop Thanksgiving favors

These are the favors that I will be filling with candy and placing at each place setting Thanksgiving day. I made more than this - these were the 3 styles. They are so easy to make with the Autumn Meadows designer paper and the Big Shot Bag with Scallops. If you don't recognize the saying - well that is cause it is from our former saying set called All Year Cheer I.
After I assembled the bags, I added the saying, a button from Button Latte, and Twill or Ribbon around the top. The little leaf on the saying is from Autumn Days stamp set and is cut out and attached with a mini glue dot.

Here they are up close. I love distressing and sponging so I added that for a nice autumnal touch.
I can't wait to see how pretty they look on the table!

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

I needed a new journal and me, not wanting to go buy one, dug around my "stuff" and found a new, unused Composition Notebook. And of course one cannot use a plain ole ordinary Composition Notebook! No sir. No way. I had to cover it and stamp it and embellish it before I could even think of using it! So I did. And this is what it looks like now.

It still looks pretty simple as altered notebooks go but I love it cause it has meaning to me.

After I covered it with Thoroughly Modern designer paper, I added some Soft Suede grosgrain ribbon and brads. The stamp is the bird from Spring Song stamp set. I am pretty sure it is a sparrow which is what I wanted cause my computer generated saying is "His Eye Is on the Sparrow...". This is a hymn that has alot of special signifigance for me and my girls and this journal is about them so it seemed only appropriate.  I stamped my little sparrow with Soft Suede ink and then brushed it with an aquapainter to add the color. The flower was done with my Big Shot and a clear button completed the flower. Now for the best part.

Some of you may remember when Stampin' Up! carried a velveteen type paper in different colors. I loved that stuff. Well I wanted something for the binding of my journal  to make it look authentic.  I used the faux suede technique that Jackie Topa, a phenomenal stamper, came up with.
All you do is take a piece of cardstock - in my case I made it the length and width needed for my journal - and run it back and forth over the edge of a table to break down the fibers. Jackie used a bone folder but I found the edge of a table worked better. Then peel the cardstock apart VERY CAREFULLY. Now you have 2 pieces - one side smooth, the other...suede! She's a genius!

You can see how it looks just like suede!! I also added 3 tabs, one for each daughter. These were made with our Round Tab punch. And that completes my journal - personalized just for me.

3 Little Words

I Miss You!! Not the person I sent the card to - although I do miss her - but the Parisian Breeze Specialty Paper! lol. I still have some left but now that it is retired I hesitate to use it!

Well as you can tell this is not one of my "simple cards". Oh no. In fact it is a very laborious detailed card as you can probably tell from the photos. I used 3 stamp sets and cut, punched, layered, glittered, and embellished as much as I possibly could!

This is a side view so you can see how I layered, and popped up, and bent, the various card elements. Yikes! Enough already!

It gave me great pleasure making it though and I wish Stampin' Up! would come out with some more specialty designer paper like Parisian Breeze. Hmmm I think I will write to them an ask. Hey it doesn't hurt to ask.

I won't go into detail about how I made the card cause that would be wayyy too boring long so here are the supplies only.

All supplies are Stampin' Up! Click here to order from me.

  • God's Beauty, Gallery and Three Little Words stamp sets

Thanksgiving again

But first before I talk about today's card, I just wanted to say thanks to all of the men and women who have served in our country's armed forces. I am truly grateful for the freedom my family has because of people like you. And you know what? A big thank you also to all of the moms, dads, wives, husbands and children of our veterans - for their sacrifice as well.

Well here is today's love offering. Notice the difference between this card and November 9th's card? The first one contains a butternut squash and this one has an eggplant. I know you were really really wondering about that. lol!

Details: The background was run through my Big Shot using the texturz plate. But after I did that I didn't think the detail stood out enough so I got out a sponge and brushed Really Rust ink over the Pumpkin Pie cardstock. It added just the depth I was looking for. Not sure you can see it in the photo though.

I used the faux copic marker technique again. It just makes those colors go POW! Some distressing, speckles (from my color spritzer and marker), sponging and some embellishments completed the card.

Night and Day

designer paper that is. I just have to tell ya again - I do love this paper cause "It goes with everything" (I crack myself up).

I liked Bethany's birthday card (November 7th post) so much, I decided to make another square card in the same color combination. I used the hostess set Asian Artistry for the image and saying. After I stamped the image with Basic Black ink, I stamped another one, colored the bird with markers, cut it out and placed it directly over the main image. You can't really tell from this photo but it is popped up ever so slightly.

Not sure I like the partial circles in the corners. They were just punched circles that were squared off to fit in the corner. I added brads to balance the brads on the main image. What do you think?

If you haven't tried Stampin' Up!'s  Basic Jumbo Grommets, give them a try. They are surprisingly easy to use and add a nice touch to projects. For my card, I set the grommet and then added the knotted ribbon separately using Tombow Multi Purpose Adhesive. Glue dots would work too.

Gifts of the Earth

Another Thanksgiving card for my family. I think I will send it to my brother and his wife cause she is a vegetarian and I am not sure she would like the previous turkey card! At least the turkey still has his feathers!!

Again I used the Gifts of the Earth stamp set from our Holiday Mini. It really lends itself well to the Faux Copic marker technique. If you are not familiar with this technique I will explain.

Copic Markers are very popular in the stamping world. They are, if I understand correctly, an alcohol based marker so they blend really well. Some very clever Stampin' Up! demonstrator (darned if I know who) came up with the same vivid results and blending by using Stampin' Up! markers and hey I am all about Stampin' Up! markers! lol

Here is how it works using the above pumpkin as an example.

  • you must use watercolor paper - it allows the colors to "move" so you don't see the lines where colors begin and end.
  •  start with the darkest color, in this case Really Rust, and outline the pumpkin where the shadows are. Usually the stamped image shows you where the shadows are.
  • go over the dark color with a lighter color - Pumpkin Pie - blending the colors. Yes you will get some Really Rust on your Pumpkin Pie marker but just wipe off the pumpkin pie marker on scrap paper  - like you would a blender pen.
  • Use an Apricot Appeal marker and color the lightest parts of the pumpkin blending it with the part you just colored. Don't forget to wipe the marker off on scrap paper.
That's it! I really like the bold, vivid colors of markers but never liked how they leave lines when coloring large images. This solves that problem. Try it! Note: I use a blender pen for the shadows around the stamped image.

After I assembled the card I thought it needed something below the "Give Thanks" saying so I punched 2 circles and added some buttons. The colors of the buttons helped balance the Chocolate Chip ribbon and Not Quite Navy/Bermuda Bay milk can.

Labor Pains

Don't mind me - I will be having labor pains all day. Ha Ha. Not really of course - just something I say on every one of my daughters' birthdays! Today is Bethany's birthday and in honor of that I made her a card with lots of Red cause she loves Red! And because she loves Red Roses, the choices were easy!

The sketch was a Mojo Monday sketch that I had never attempted. I thought the sketch would be good for the card I had in mind. To start it off I used our NIght and Day designer paper for the background. Oh man I hope Stampin' Up! keeps this paper, or something similar, around cause I really like using black and white!

The image is from 5th Avenue Floral stamp set. I embossed it on watercolor paper using white craft ink and white embossing powder. Then I water colored it with Real Red and Bravo Burgundy with a little bit of gray shading around the edges.  I added some Real Red Polka Dot grosgrain ribbon and silver brads and a little "Happy Birthday" on the side. It needed a little something so I put a small Flower brad beneath the saying.

But the best part of this card?

The "secret" message tucked under the rose!

She really is God's gift to me - all of my daughters are - and I feel very blessed to have them in my life.

Ok before I get even more sappy and sentimental here are the supplies. lol

Dyeing for Thanksgiving Turkey

Now before you go any further - I know that is not how dying should be spelled - but it is a play on words so read on.
I had the day off from work yesterday so in between cleaning and laundry I had a therapy stamping moment and made this card. And oooh I am so proud of myself. But before I tell you about that let me explain the card - just a little.

I used Autumn Meadows designer paper and the turkey stamp from  Gifts of the Earth stamp set, both found in the Holiday Mini. Now, I have talked about water color paper and markers before so I won't dwell on that other than to say I thought for this card, the vibrant, earthy colors in the designer paper necessitated vibrant, earthy markers so that is what I went with.

After the turkey was colored in, it still needed something. That's when I brought out my trusty ole Color Spritzer Tool and paired it up with a Really Rust marker for some spattered ink on the image and leaf. I decided I have issues with empty white space. lol.

Tip of the Day (or week or month): Notice the corduroy button and grosgrain ribbon on the card. Look closely. Recognize them? Of course not - cause the button used to be Baja Breeze and the ribbon started out Vanilla! It's true! I remember reading about Cindy Lawrence, another demonstrator, changing the color of a corduroy button by using ink refill. I thought, well I have all of these Baja Breeze buttons (now retired) - I wonder what would happen if I colored one with a Really Rust Marker. So I tried it. It looked ok, but blotchy so I spritzed it with water and blotted off the excess. Once it dried I had a Really Rust Corduroy button!! How cool is that? You can't even tell it used to be light blue!  Now for the ribbon.

Yep the ribbon started out Vanilla but I dipped it in Really Rust ink refill along with a few drops of water, then blotted off the excess and let it dry. Voila - Really Rust 5/8" grosgrain ribbon!! The possibilities are endless.

Hopefully I inspired you to try these techniques on your own. It is so much fun to use what you have in a new and creative way.

Here before you know it!

Thanksgiving that is. I hope to post some more Thanksgiving projects this week - if I can make the time to make the projects! lol. I already showed you my Give Thanks blocks a few days ago. Today I want to show you this card I made last year and never sent. Why? I have absolutely no idea! I really like this card too!

After I water colored the images from Autumn Harvest stamp set, I cut out the gourd and smaller pumpkin so I could add some dimension to the card. For something different I used twill instead of ribbon. Now I love our twill but I never think to use it. Gotta work on that!

I just noticed the little twirly vine on the large pumpkin. I did that with the fine point end of a Chocolate Chip marker. Nice touch I think - it filled up the white space.
