Thinking out of the box

In the Occasions Mini stamp set, Easter Blossoms, there is an egg image. Remember this Easter Egg tree I made? Well I was looking at this stamp the other day and thought it would make a great flower. So that is what I used to make the flower on today's card. I love it! Note: a Stamp-a-ma-jig helps alot getting correct placement!

First I cut 2 circles with the Big Shot and 2 of the new dies- one 3" and the other 3 1/2". After I stamped my "petals" on the smaller circle, I added Basic Pearls to each petal. Then I added a Vintage Flower Adornment to the center. Dimensionals popped up the smaller circle just a tad.

The ruffled ribbon is so easy and so much fun to make. Just fray the end of the Seam Binding Ribbon enough to be able to grab a few of the center threads. Pull gently on the threads moving the ruffles along until it is the way you want it to look. I tacked it down with about 5 mini glue dots in a row. The Basic Pearls are purely decorative.

I really like this card. It is so elegant! I deliberately didn't add a sentiment thinking it is more versatile that way. It could be used for just about any occasion and if I decide to add a sentiment? Well that won't be hard to add one.

Stamps: Easter Blossoms (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Baja Breeze and Whisper White
Ink: Baja Breeze
Accessories: Big Shot, 3" and 3 1/2" circle dies, Finial Press textured impressions embossing folder, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Basic Pearls, Vintage Flower Adornment, Baja Breeze Seam Binding Ribbon

Thanks for stopping. Have a great day!

Spring is on its Way

One of the things I do as soon as I receive our Stampin' Success magazine, is look at the samples. I look at the colors, design and sketch. There was a card in March's issue that caught my eye right away because of the sketch. And Stampin Addicts even used the sketch for their challenge last week!
I stamped the branch from the stamp set, Easter Blossoms, in Black Stazon. Then I colored it with Stampin' Up! markers. To accent the card I made a simple paper flower by using designer paper, punches and a Vintage Flower Adornment in the center.

This is a very simple card to duplicate and can be used for Easter or Springtime!

Stamps: Easter Blossoms (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Pear Pizzazz, Very Vanilla, Springtime Vintage dsp
Ink: Black Stazon, Rose Red ink, Rose Red, Pink Pirouette, Crumb Cake, Pear Pizzazz markers
Other: Scallop circle punch, Fancy Flower Punch, Vintage Flower Adornment, Pear Pizzazz ribbon

Travel Kit

A travel kit is kind of a misnomer for this project. It is really a box I made, and filled with travel items, but it really isn't suitable to travel with. If you know what I mean.

Two of Linnea's friends drove out to Ohio this past week to visit her so I grabbed that opportunity to put together a box of things too heavy to mail. Since she lives near her sisters, I sent along some things for them too! This travel kit being part of it.
You see, we are going to be traveling soon, via airplane,so I knew they would be needing travel sized items to take with them in their carry-on luggage. They love to receive handmade things from me so I created a simple box with cardstock and Newsprint designer paper. Then I added lots of travel items, and a card, to each box. This particular box went to Bethany because she likes red. Linnea's was Marina Mist and Alathea's was Pear Pizzaz. All 3 boxes used Newsprint dsp.

  Sorry, I didn't photograph the cards - I forgot!

Stamps: Afterthoughts (hostess)
Paper: Real Red, Very Vanilla, Newsprint dsp
Ink: Real Red
Other: 2 1/2" circle punch, Large silver brad, Black striped grosgrain ribbon, Big Shot, 3" circle die, velcro

Stampingly yours,

Very Vintage

Today's card is one I made because I wanted to use up some of my Springtime Vintage designer paper. It seems I have more of the Baja Breeze patterns than any other. I found this sketch in an old magazine and liked it because it enabled me to use 3 different paper patterns.
This card fits in a business size envelope so it is larger than I would normally make.

I used the unmounted In Stitches wheel to give it some faux stitching. As I have said before -that is my kind of sewing! Other than that, I don't think there is anything that needs explaining. It is a card full of this and that, but nothing difficult.

Stamps: Oval All, Baby Blossoms (Occasions Mini), In Stitches wheel unmounted (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Springtime Vintage dsp, Baja Breeze, Very Vanilla cardstock
Ink: Baja Breeze
Other: Basic Pearls, Scallop Oval punch, dimensionals, Boho Blossoms punch, Scallop Border punch, Crochet Trim

Hope you have a creative, stamping, kind of day!

Happy Birthday Stampin Addicts!

Stampin Addicts celebrated their 2nd birthday yesterday, February 22nd! If you are not familiar with this website for ALL Stampin' Up! stampers, you can check it out by clicking HERE.

There are lots of Stampin Addicts birthday challenges going on this week, one of which is using the new Petal Cone bigz die to create a birthday project. The challenge can be found HERE

I decided to use the Petal Cone die as the base for a Bouquet of Flowers card. Normally the Petal Cone die would be used to create something 3-D but I wanted to make a card. Here  is my card closed.
   Here it is open.
And a view of it closed and flat.
The Baja Breeze Seam Binding Ribbon keeps it closed. I used another new Bigz die - Fun Flowers, to make the flowers. All I did was cut them, scrunch them, and then added a Vintage Brad through the center. Lots of Mini Glue Dots hold the flowers to the inside of the card. I left the back flap up to give the flowers even more stability. That way they won't wilt.

Stamps: Bring on the Cake (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Springtime Vintage dsp, Rose Red, Crumb Cake, Pear Pizzazz cardstock
Ink:Soft Suede
Accessories: Big Shot, Petal Cone Die, Fun Flowers Die, Baja Breeze Seam Binding Ribbon, Vintage Brads, Basic Pearls

I hope you will check out the Stampin Addicts website sometime. It is so worth it. They have a wonderful gallery and a forum for demonstrators and non-demonstrators alike. They are also having a Birthday Blog Hop Friday, Feb. 25 - Sunday, Feb. 27. I won't be participating, but I know it will be fabulous!

Thanks for stopping by!

Tutorial for Birthday Favor

Thank you so much for all of the positive comments regarding the Birthday projects I created for the Control Freaks February Blog Tour found HERE. I received many requests for a tutorial for the little carts I used for favors. This was one of them.
Because I love you, my faithful followers, I made up a short tutorial.
These are the pieces you will need.
1. I cut the Top Note with the Big Shot first, then cut it in half widthwise. I embossed last.

2.

3. Make sure you adhere it to the "wrong side" of the embossed Top Note! And I removed all of the Sticky Strip before adhering - the red in the picture is strictly to show you placement.
4. It is easier to add the Hemp Twine before the other side is adhered.
5. Add the wheels last. Make sure you use Sticky Strip!! A Brad may be even better.

Enjoy!

Control Freaks Blog Tour - Birthday Theme

Welcome to the February Tour de Freaks where it's all about Birthdays - something we can all relate to! Officially the tour begins tomorrow, February 20th so please come back when all the kinks are worked out.

If you have arrived from the mega talented Mary Brown (stampercamper)'s blog, then you are at the right place. If you have just joined the Tour, don't worry. The tour goes full circle so just follow the links.

I chose to focus on a child's birthday because I work with children, and besides - what child doesn't love a birthday?! And, since most children love animals (as do I!), I combined the two for a fun, animal, birthday theme.
Various punches and embossing folders were used to create the 3 little carts on this zoo themed birthday card. Each cart holds a different animal from Fox and Friends - a perfect stamp set for this type of theme!

Every party needs party favors right? Of course! So I took the embossed cart idea from the birthday card and made it 3 dimensional by using the Top Note die and lots of circle punches.

A cello bag filled with animal crackers and tied off with twine and a tag fits in each cart.
ETA: A brief tutorial will be posted on Feb. 22.

And for that special birthday gift, I made a zoo themed gift bag, using the same punches, Top Note die and Fox and Friends stamp! The gift bag is a Genie Bag (named for its originator), and is simply a trimmed lunch bag that is covered, front and back, with cardstock. The handle at the top is punched out with a square punch.
To make the cart on the front of my bag, I used the Top Note die and cut 2 from Tempting Turquoise cardstock - one embossed, one not. I cut these in half, trimmed the center from the non-embossed half, and adhered them over the Whisper White cardstock. To stamp the animals, I used masks and stamped them on the Whisper White cardstock before I added the "cart".

Stamps: Fox and Friends, Bring on the Cake (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Play Date dsp, Chocolate Chip, Daffodil Delight, Tempting Turquoise, Whisper White cardstock
Ink: Tempting Turquoise, Daffodil Delight, Chocolate Chip, Peach Parfait, Old Olive, More Mustard
Other: Big Shot, Top Note die, Finial Press tief, Perfect Polka Dots tief, Square Lattice tief, 1 3/8", 1 1/4", 1", 3/4", 1/2" circle punches, Curly Label Punch, Wide Oval and Large oval punch, 1 3/8" square punch, brads, hemp twine, Mini Glue dots, Jumbo eyelets, Large Choc. Chip brad, Daffodil Delight Satin Ribbon, Small Cello bags, dimensionals, buttons, 1/8" Daffodil Delight ribbon

Thanks for hanging in there with me! I am sure by now you are anxious to move on to the next stop on the Tour de Freaks! The next stop just happens to be the blog owned and operated by another mega talented stamper, Jan Tinklenberg (Jan Tink). Just click on her name or on the link below to continue the Tour. Have fun!
I hope you will come back and see me soon!

Vellum Build a Blossom

Friendly Reminder: Control Freaks Blog Tour on February 20th. All projects - cards and 3D - will center around Birthdays! I hope you can join us!

I have another birthday card to show you today. It is not a Sound card like the previous cards because it was for my mother and she hears my voice, albeit over the phone, all the time.

Her birthday was in January and I wanted to make her an extra special card with a vintage look because she is vintage - in a good way! So I made her this card with lots of vintage elements.
The focal point of this card is obviously the flower which is stamped on vellum cardstock with Perfect Plum classic ink. I used the new Build a Blossom stamp set, and then punched it out with the Blossom Petals Punch. I used lots of petals because I wanted it to be nice and full. Mini Glue Dots really help keeping it all together Tip: heat set the ink before punching so it doesn't smear.

The back drop for the flower is Springtime Vintage designer paper, Crochet Trim, Basic Pearls and a Vintage brad. I also added an edging of faux stitching done with the unmounted In Stitches wheel.

Remember these cards found HERE and another one HERE? I used the same technique to stamp the row of stitches around my card. A stamp-a-ma-jig worked really well to get proper placement. I think the row of stitches I used for today's card is perfect for the vintage look - kind of like hand embroidered.

My mother loved her card. Of course she loves everything I make, but she particularly loved this card. :)

Stamps: Build a Blossom and Bring On The Cake; In Stitches wheel (all in Occasions Mini)
Paper: Pear Pizzazz, Perfect Plum and Very Vanilla cardstock; Vellum cardstock, Springtime Vintage designer paper
Ink: Perfect Plum
Accessories: Blossoms Petal Punch, 1" circle punch, Jewelry Tag Punch, Vintage Brad, Vintage Trinkets, Crochet Trim, Vanilla Satin Ribbon, Basic Pearls, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Mini Glue Dots

See you again soon? Sure hope so!

Ice Cream Parlor, Worms, and Bugs

Yesterday I showed you my nephew's birthday Sound Card. Today it's my nieces turn. She just turned 6  a few weeks ago and this is the card I made. It is another Sound Card from Stampin' Up! and once again David and I had a blast recording it. Honestly, I don't know who enjoys these more - the kids, or us!

My niece likes bugs, and worms, and things that make me say, "ick, yuck, and gross". I admire her for that! So the stamp set, Bugs and Kisses was a perfect choice for her birthday card. The idea for using the treat cup for a magnifying glass is not mine. I don't know who came up with it but it sure is a cute idea!

The designer paper is a Sale-a-bration selection this year. It is called Ice Cream Parlor (don't you just love the name?) and comes with  a pack of Quick Accents (not seen here). I love the bright colors and patterns!

Here is a close up of the ladybug and worm. The ladybug is covered with Crystal Effects to give it that glossy glow. The worm is covered in Dazzling Diamond Glitter because like most little girls, my niece loves glitter! And I added 2 little pearls for its eyes - a true girly girl worm.
Stamps: Bugs & Kisses and Inspired by Nature
Paper: Peach Parfait, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, Chocolate Chip, Very Vanilla cardstock and Ice Cream Parlor designer paper (Sale-a-bration)
Ink: Old Olive, Pacific Point, Real Red, Basic Black
Accessories: Chocolate Chip brad, Sweet Treat Cup, Basic Pearls, Dazzling Diamond Glitter, Daffodil Delight Satin Ribbon, Crystal Effects, Mini Glue Dots, Word Window Punch, 2 1/2" circle punch, 1 3/4" circle punch, Sound Card

That is my second Birthday card of the week. Tomorrow is another - all leading up to the Birthday themed Control Freaks Blog Tour on the 20th!

Have a creative, stamping day.

You Rock Birthday

My nephew turned 8 earlier this month. His birthday is always special because he was born 3 months premature and it was touch and go for the first months of his life. He pulled through, and now he is a happy, healthy, little boy.

David and I had recorded a birthday message for my niece (same family) back in January. That story can be found Here. So of course we just had to do the same for my nephew! I made this card using one of Stampin' Up!'s Sound Cards and then we recorded a knock knock joke because he loves knock knock jokes. Well if that wasn't a hilarious task! And after many tries we finally did it. Too much fun!

My nephew LOVED the card. He played it over and over.My niece loved hers too by the way. She is 4 and was thrilled to hear her name coming from the card. These Sound Cards are the best!

I have another birthday sound card to show you tomorrow - another niece, same family! I'm preparing you for the upcoming Control Freaks Blog Tour on Feb. 20th. It's a Birthday theme!

Bliss Swap

This is/was my Sale-a-bration swap for the Control Freaks. It uses the Free (with a $50 purchase) stamp set, Bliss and the stamp set, Dot, Dot, Dot which is a Sale-a-bration optional stamp.

I really like the Dot, Dot, Dot stamp set and just received the Solid Stipes stamp which I can't wait to use! These smaller background stamps are actually larger than they appear in the catalog which is nice!

For this card I stamped the dots with Vanilla Craft ink and just let them dry. And as for the colors I chose - they are based off some towels I saw in a department store!

Stamps:  Bliss (Sale-a-bration) and Dot, Dot, Dot (Sale-a-bration option)
Paper: Early Espresso, Certainly Celery, Tempting Turquoise, Very Vanilla
Ink: Vanilla craft ink, Early Espresso and Tempting Turquoise classic ink
Other: Big Shot, Perfect Polka Dots tief, Basic Pearls, Neutral Brads, Certainly Celery Striped Grosgrain, Pinking Hearts Border Punch, Decorative Label Punch, Wide Oval Punch, Bitty Punch Pack

Enjoy your day! Thanks for stopping.

Markers on Embossed Vellum

One of the stamps in the set, Blowing Kisses, is this sweet little vase of hearts. Yes, it is meant for Valentine's day I suppose, but I wanted to use it for a more generic card. Of course the easiest way to do this would be color choice. I chose Bashful Blue and So Saffron.

I stamped and colored the vase on Watercolor paper, then set it aside while I made the base. The base is Bashful Blue with So Saffron and Whisper White. On top of that I layered 4 squares punched with the 1 3/8" square punch and finally - the vellum layer.

First I embossed the Vellum with the Big Shot and the Framed Tulips textured impressions embossing folder. Then I flipped it over and colored the indentations with a Bashful Blue marker. After that dried I went over it again with a Bashful Blue marker. Vellum is tricky to adhere to cardstock because adhesive will show through the vellum. For this card I used a mini glue dot in each corner.

My stamped image, and all of its layers, was adhered to the top of the vellum. I like how the background of this card is soft and muted due to the vellum which makes the tiny image and the sentiment stand out. It frames it quite nicely I think!

The card, by the way, is 4 1/4" square.

Stamps: Blowing Kisses
Paper: Bashful Blue, So Saffron, Whisper White, SU Watercolor Paper, Vellum
Ink: Black Stazon, Bashful Blue, So Saffron, Crumb Cake markers
Other: Big Shot, Framed Tulips tief, Mini Glue Dot, Blender pen, 1 3/8" square punch

Happy Friday! Hope it's a good one!

Finally Used the Birdcage

I haven't figured out how to best use the birdcage image from Nature Walk stamp set. I have had a few ideas but nothing seems to work for me. And if you follow my blog you probably have read my feelings about a birdcage in a nature set. lol

Today's card is more about the layout than the image but I did manage to use the birdcage!
I used a cool technique to emboss the birdcage! First I inked it up with Versamark and then I immediately inked it up with Early Espresso Classic ink. I stamped it directly onto Botanical Gazette designer paper and embossed with Clear Embossing Powder. The Versamark held the Embossing Powder - the Early Espresso added the color!

This card has lots of layers: cardstock, Botanical Gazette designer paper and First Editions specialty designer paper.

For the layer of First Edition dsp, I cut it by using the Big Shot and Top Note die, and then stamped it with images from Nature Walk to tie it into the nature theme. A little sponging around the edges softened the stark Vanilla color.

The flowers were made with the First Edition designer paper and the Table Setting Bigz die and wow, were they easy to do. Once the spirals were cut, I rolled them, sponged them, crushed them, and glued them to the card front with Crystal Effects. I really, really like how they look with the leaves and the birdcage!

So that is pretty much the top half of the card. For the bottom half I used the Big Shot again - love that thing! - and cut some swirls with the Swirls Scribbles sizzlit. This is one of those little dies with a big value! And those little brown dots on the bottom right corner are not brads. They are  all part of the Swirls Scribbles sizzlit and make great "faux brads".

Stamps: Nature Walk (Occasions Mini) and Fabulous Phrases
Paper: Marina Mist, Early Espresso, Very Vanilla cardstock, Botanical Gazette dsp and First Edition dsp
Ink: Versamark, Early Espresso, Marina Mist
Accessories: Big Shot, Swirls Scribbles Sizzlit, Top Note die, Table Setting bigz die, Early Espresso Satin Ribbon, sponge, Clear Embossing Powder, Crystal Effects, Curly Label punch

Thanks for stopping.

Country Heart

Yesterday's card was supposed to be clean and simple. Today's cards really is clean and simple!

I love gingham. I think it is the country girl in me or maybe it's memories of my grandmother's kitchen - all gingham. And red gingham? My favorite!
I had some random pieces of white borders punched with the Pinking Hearts Border Punch that I layered on the front of my card. White on White. To finish off the top of this border of borders, I just adhered a piece of White Satin Ribbon and trimmed the edges to fit the card. In other words it isn't wrapped all the way around the card. I try not to do that if I can help it because it takes more ribbon to do so. Some people call that cheap, some frugal, I call it .... practical. :)

Pawsitively Prints designer paper has this yummy gingham paper in the Poppy Parade color. I used it for my Soup Mug found HERE, and I used it for the heart on the front of my card. Just a little bit of country for Valentine's Day! Of course I needed a sentiment so I stamped a tag by using the Tiny Tags stamp set. I use this set alot and hope Stampin' Up! keeps it around for awhile!

The white thread in the button is Crochet Thread and can be found anywhere crochet material is sold. It is very inexpensive and will last a long, long, long time! lol.

Stamps: Tiny Tags
Paper: Whisper White, Pawsitively Prints dsp
Ink: Poppy Parade
Accessories: White Satin Ribbon, Heart Punch, Jewelry Tag Punch, Pinking Hearts Border Punch, Button, Crochet Thread

Have a wonderful day. Thanks for stopping!

Birds on a Wire

The other day I posted a card found HERE, using the stamp set, Valentine Defined. I lamented that it didn't come with a bird to perch on the wire which gave me the idea for today's card.

I combined Valentine Defined with the birds from Aviary - perfect!
This was meant to be a clean and simple card. But sometimes I just can't stop adding things! Here was my thought process for this card and my final interpretation.

  • I started out with the 3 birds on the wire. Cute and adorable - just what I wanted.

  • Then I decided to add the bubble but didn't like the heart because it looked like the bird was in love with one? both? of the other birds. But how to cover the heart?

  • So after much contemplation (I had alot of fun imagining scenarios surrounding various sentiments), I stamped the "hello" from Tiny Teacup, on a separate piece of cardstock and adhered that right over the heart. Stop there? No, not me.

  • I added a big Real Red Satin Ribbon bow. Looks good! Stop? No.

  • I thought the bottom half had too much white space. Ok, I'll add some valentine foliage. And then I wondered, what was I thinking?

  • So I added a thin strip of Red Glimmer paper - oh like that helped. lol.

End result: a low wire above tall foliage with 3 birds, one of which is either friendly, or scared it's about to get beat up. And that is what happens when you don't stop while you are ahead!

Stamps: AviaryValentine Defined (Occasions Mini), Tiny Teacup (Sale-a-bration option)
Paper: Real Red, Whisper White, Red Glimmer Paper (Occ. Mini)
Ink: Early Espresso, Real Red
Accessories: Real Red Satin Ribbon

Enjoy your day!

Blowing Kisses

I wanted a sweet and simple card to send to my daughters for Valentine's Day so I designed this one. I used the Lots of Love Letterpress Plate for the base card (minus ink) but you can't tell at all from the photo. You will just have to take my word for it! I used it with Shimmery White cardstock so it is subtle.

I think this stamp set, Blowing Kisses, is one of those easy to miss stamp sets in the catalog. The images are fairly small but it is the sayings that come with the set that I like. They are perfect for my loved ones.

Stamps: Blowing Kisses
Paper: Shimmery White, Real Red, Watercolor paper, Red Glimmer Paper
Ink: Black Stazon, Stampin' Up! Markers
Other: Pinking Hearts Border punch, oval punch, heart punch, Basic Rhinestones, Big Shot, Lots of Love Letterpress Plate

   Have a Blessed Day!

Bleaching with Stamps

I have been using so much red and pink these days (you know - Valentine colors), that I decided to go a completely different direction for today's card. I also resurrected one of my favorite techniques: bleaching.

Bleaching is a fairly easy technique. All you need is a piece white felt or, in my case, I used a paper towel folded in quarters. Put this in a container, add enough bleach to moisten the paper towel, and stamp. The most important thing to remember is to wash off your stamp right away!

I used Peach Parfait cardstock and Bleach for the background of the card. Do you recognize the stamp? I deliberately used alot of bleach as my "ink" to give the stamped image a less defined look. The stamp is the filigree stamp from the Sale-a-bration set, Bliss. I gave you a little clue though because the little bird on the front is also from the set, Bliss

One of the new products in this issue of the Occasions Mini is the First Edition designer paper. It is double sided but a much thinner weight than other designer paper. And there is more of it! It is perfect for scrunching and tearing and layering and...the list goes on!

I used the new Fun Flowers bigz die and the XL Flower Punch to make my flower embellishment. It is so easy - just cut, punch, scrunch and add Big Designer Button with Hemp Twine. Voila, you're done.

Stamps: Bliss
Paper: Peach Parfait cardstock, First Edition dsp
Ink: Early Espresso
Accessories: Big Shot, Fun Flowers bigz die, XL Flower Punch, Big Designer Button, Hemp Twine, sponge, Bleach

Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful weekend!

Bliss and Dots and Stitching

I am really loving the Sale-a-bration set called, Bliss. And I am loving the combination of Crumb Cake with various colors! For today's card, I combined all of the above with a Vanilla circle stamped with the Dot, Dot, Dot, a stamp from the Idea Book and Catalog and is another Sale-a-bration stamp!

If you look closely at the card, you can see zig zag stitching around the largest piece of designer paper. This isn't actual stitching  but a row of stitches from the In Stitches Wheel. Remember how I said I unmounted the wheel? Click HERE for that post. Well here is another sample - Now this kind of sewing I like! It's even a little crooked, just like my real sewing would be.
This was one of those cards that came together quickly. I didn't agonize over anything. Well I take that back. I couldn't make up my mind about the button. It is a purple/plum button but you can't tell from the photo. At first I had a red button on the card, but that clashed. Then I tried Night of Navy and Crumb Cake, neither of which I liked. So I ended up with purple for all of you purple lovers out there. Ha.

To make this card I used:
Stamps: Bliss (Sale-a-bration), Dot, Dot, Dot (Sale-a-bration option), In Stitches wheel (Occasions Mini)
Paper: Crumb Cake, Very Vanilla, Blushing Bride dsp
Ink: Chocolate Chip
Accessories: Vanilla Taffeta Ribbon, Plum button, Heart punch, Basic Pearl, Oval Punch 3/4" circle punch, 2 1/2" circle punch, Big Shot, Northern Flurry textured impressions embossing folder (still available)

Happy Friday!
